The #1 Problem with the network marketing industry is people buy on emotion and then are left stranded with no practical means to build their business…
Most people don’t enter a network marketing business with the needed marketing experience to produce MLM leads week after week and day after day. The mass of prospects usually attend an opportunity meeting where they are emotionally mesmerized by a fluent speaker who has achieved great success in his business. Several testimonies are produced and after and hour of brainwashing the new prospect is led back to their MLM sponsor with dollar signs rolling around in their head often times eager and ready to join the business.
Once the new member gets home and the ether wears off they soon come to the realization that they have no idea how to start selling their opportunity. They are told by their sponsor to start with their “warm market” and call all of their friends and family. They are told to create a memory jogger list of everyone they know from their doctor to their trash man and add them to their MLM leads list. They are then encouraged to contact each of these leads and invite them to an Opportunity Meeting. Unfortunately, for most, this will not produce the amazing results promised in the well tailored presentation.
Simply put the warm list is not a good source for Network Marketing Leads. Sadly, for the new member, most if not all of these prospects will not join the business. Some might jump in for a time but quickly drop out because of their own lack of marketing knowledge. The new MLMer is left with little or no business. “It’s OK” they are told. Just hang in there things will get better, buy this book, buy this cd, you just have to BELIEVE more. In the end there is still miserable results, no profits and no new network marketing leads.
In the meantime their sponsor isn’t doing much better. The seasoned MLM rep has had to become a recruiting machine. He is like a hamster on a wheel running and running but getting nowhere. As 2 or 3 new members join his business 2 or 3 drop out. The cycle is endless. He has watched one leg of his downline disintegrate overnight. Hoped for bonuses are lost as autoships are canceled. “When am I going to get paid what I deserve”, he often wonders. The truth is that the efforts of one person are not easily duplicated in the MLM business.
Network Marketing is now a MARKETING BUSINESS and no longer sharing business. With so many different opportunities entering the playing field people are left bouncing from business to business looking for the Holy Grail. They do this because there is a severe lack of marketing training in MLM’s. If people were only taught the right way and the smart way to market their opportunity they would stick with their company. Level #1
Position – This is the entry level of leadership. In a traditional business this would be the manager who has leadership authority based on his position. The employees follow him because they have to. It is usually not a voluntary following but out of the need for a job. In Network Marketing this would be the new member who is just getting started and has a few new distributors in his downline. He has sort of a following but has not developed the higher leadership skills.
Level #2
Permission – This level of leadership is when you begin to develop influence. At this level of leadership people understand that you care about them and they begin to work for you even when not obligated to do so. A leader in the Permission level is leading by interrelationships. This leader develops relationships with his team members and focuses his time and energy into the individuals desires and needs. This is the Network Marketer who has a small team and is helping them to develop and learn to build their own team.
Level #3
Production – This is where things really begin to come together and a momentum begins to build. Instead of spending time on relationship building like in the Permission level you are now getting together with your members for the specific purpose of results. These are more business like meetings focused on growth and strategy. They are result oriented meetings. This is when big profits begin to kick in and moral is high.
Level #4
People Development – At this level of leadership you have loyal followers because they have personally grown and developed directly due to the mentoring and coaching you have put into them. This is the Network Marketer with a huge team of members who admire him. This is the kind of leader that can leave one company for another and take his entire team with him. Also at this level you have other strong leaders working under you and replicating your results.
Level #5
Personhood – Most leaders don’t reach this level. These are the leaders who are recognized by name. These are the Brian Tracy’s, the Jim Rohn’s the Robert Kiyosaki’s of the world. These leaders have developed this level over a lifetime of commitment.
Where are you in your own personal growth and what are you going to do to reach higher levels of leadership? Your business growth and profit will be a direct result of your leadership abilities. Remember people don’t follow companies or products. They follow leaders and if you are a accomplished leader people will join whatever business you are in.

Balance in life is very important to me. I have a work hard and play hard philosophy. It’s easy to appreciate life’s finer moments when you’ve worked hard to enjoy them. I have built my business and personal life on a strong foundation of Quality and Excellence while at the same time keeping family first. Even as a small child growing up in West Virginia my parents inspired me to always do my best. I came from very humble beginnings but I developed a strong work ethic and solid values. I have carried these ideas into my personal and business relationships and strive for excellence at each occasion.
I used to work Harder and Not Smarter.
Through commitment and hard work I was able to put myself through Business College while at the same time working long hours to pay my expenses. These were the days of working hard and not smart. However, I learned valuable lessons about work ethic and dedication and how to push forward to reach my goals. It was a struggle but it taught me that if I persevere and refuse to accept failure then I can attain whatever I set out to do.
My First Experience with the Professional World
Once college was over I took all of the elemental concepts I had learned and entered the professional world. I knew in my heart that I didn’t want to work for someone else but I had little experience and decided to take a job in new home sales. In one year’s time and through sheer determination I worked my way up to become the #2 sales rep in the entire company while also being the youngest sales rep on staff. I surprised a lot of people who saw me as young kid with no experience. I attribute my early success to my down to earth approach in relating to my clients. I never sold my prospects. Instead I just treated them with the same down home hospitality I grew up with. I was more of an advisor and a consultant than a salesman. I learned that when you treat people right and help them reach their goals the sales come naturally.
My Later Career
I carried my early success into my Real Estate career. After around 5 years of working for someone else it was time for me to venture out on my own. Real Estate had always been an interest of mine. I remember buying the Carlton Sheets course at the age of 18. I was a young entrepreneur. Being my own boss and financial freedom was never a dream but a reality and my eyes were set on reaching that goal. I opened my real estate business and quickly became a top real estate professional in my area. My reputation was built on providing quality services and consistent results backed by honesty and integrity. For 15 years I collected a myriad of successes, awards and satisfied clients.
The Shift
My new focus turned to internet marketing specifically in network marketing and direct sales. The beginning was a huge struggle and a lot of wasted money. I tried the friends and family thing and cold calling and buying leads but I quickly discovered that I was spending more money than I was making. I would add a few new reps and they would drop out in just a short time. I was like a hamster on a wheel working very hard but getting nowhere. This was not what I had expected and defiantly not what I deserved for all the hard work and long hours I was putting in. Never in any of my businesses had I felt so helpless. Everything I learned from my upline and all the resources I could get my hands on just would not work. After all my past success I was starting to doubt my abilities. This struggle went on for months and month but I’m no quitter and I was determined to find answers.
The Present Day
Finally after so many failed attempts I sought out a few leaders in the industry who market exclusivly online. I learned from the pros and began using their methology. It’s amazing what can be done when you know the right way to do it. One simple shift in my marketing along with using the proper methods and tools has made all the difference. I have now built a successful and profitable online business that continues to grow each day. It feels so good to be back on my feet again. The smiles are back and I’m more energized with this new sense of freedom. I’m always looking for sharp new leaders to teach and partner with.
